Gunfight in Abilane

Never once does Bobby Darin sing
"Mack the Knife" or "Splish Splash" in Gunfight in Abilene.
Instead, he plays a peaceable western sheriff, determined to stave off an
outlaw invasion. The head outlaw is Leslie Nielsen, which makes this film very
hard to watch with a straight face these days. The Universal City backlot gets
a good workout in the blood-spattered finale of Gunfight in Abilene, which
barely made the theatrical rounds before entrenching itself on late night
television. The film should not be confused with Gunfighters of Abilene, a 1960
oater starring Buster Crabbe.

Fury at Gunsight Pass

Stars: Richard Long, Lisa Davis, David Brian, Neville Brand, Katherine Warren, Percy Helton
Fury at Gunsight Pass is a brief, to-the-point "budget" western, well cast and excitingly staged. David Brian stars as bank
robber Whitey Turner, whose outlaw gang takes over a small town. Beating gang
leader Dirk Hogan (Neville Brand) to the punch by robbing the town bank ahead
of schedule, Turner winds up empty-handed when crooked undertaker Boggs (Percy
Helton) swipes the loot. Boggs is killed, whereupon his widow (Katherine
Warren) gathers together the money and makes plans to skip town while the Law
pursues Turner and Hogan. This is one of those stories in which no one emerges
smelling like a rose; the suspense lies not in who will "get it", but
how long will it be before someone halfway honest appears on screen.

Gunsmoke in Tucson

In this western, the battle
between ranchers and farmers provides the background for a battle between two
disparate brothers. One is the outlaw gangleader of the Blue Chip gang; the
other is a hard-bitten lawman. The outlaw is only too happy to witness the land
conflicts as he plans on stealing the lands of the dead on both sides.
Fortunately, his good brother causes him to change his bad-guy ways, side with
the farmers and go straight.

Gunpoint

Stars: Audie Murphy, Joan Staley, Warren Stevens, Morgan Woodward, Denver Pyle, Edgar Buchanan
Gunpoint stars Audie Murphy as a
Colorado sheriff -- and never mind that the film was shot in Utah. Sheriff
Lucas (Murphy) sets out to bring bad guy Drago (Morgan Woodward) to justice. If
the sheriff doesn't succeed, that will be fine and dandy with deputy Hold
(Denver Pyle), who's out to get Murphy's job. Edgar Buchanan took a break from
Petticoat Junction to play the sort of comic relief he'd been doing in westerns
for years. Gunpoint's well-photographed but economical highlights include a
wild horse stampede and a shootout with disgruntled Apaches.

Gun Fever
Stars: Mark Stebens, John Lupton, Larry Storch, Maureen Hingert
Stars: Mark Stebens, John Lupton, Larry Storch, Maureen Hingert
Mark Stevens doubles as star and
director of the compact western Gun Fever. Lucas (Stevens) and his partner
Simon (John Lupton) set about to capture the renegade white man who caused the
deaths of Lucas' parents in an Indian raid. The villain turns out to be Simon's
own father Trench (Aaron Saxon), setting the stage for reams of quasi-Freudian
dialogue. Larry Storch does a nice semicomic turn as a laconic Mexican, while
Jana Davi supplies the love interest. The European prints of Gun Fever were
augmented with several steamy sex scenes, with Jana Davi displaying far more
than her acting skills.
